FAQs on Attorney Representation

1. Do I really need an attorney?

You might not. Then again, you might. The best way to know is to talk to a lawyer in person. That's why we would be happy to meet with you for a free half-hour consultation. If it looks like a case you can handle yourself, we'll tell you so--and we'll do our best to steer you towards some resources that might help you along.

On the other hand, we do believe in the old adage that one is better safe than sorry. If you retain Smith Law Firm, you can have the peace of mind that comes with knowing that your case is being handled competently by a professional attorney. And we'll work hard to keep your costs down.

2. A good friend of mine had a bad experience with an attorney. How can I be sure that the same thing won't happen to me?

At Smith Law Firm we are committed to making your experience with us as painless--and as quick--as possible. Our job is to solve your problems, not create new ones. We make it a point to listen to our clients. Every client phone call will be returned within two business days.

3. How much is this going to cost?

Your first half-hour consultation is free.

Our rates are very competitive and do vary according to the nature of the work we are asked to do, so it will be difficult to quote you a fee until we have met you and discussed your case. We will not begin charging you until you understand our fee structure.

4. What will happen when I come in?

We will sit down and talk about whatever is on your mind. Everything you tell us will be strictly confidential, whether you decide to hire us or not. After our conversation, we may need to do a bit more research to see how we can best meet your needs. We will contact you within three business days of our first meeting to let you know if we can take your case, and we will explain our rates to you at that time.

5. When I come in, should I bring anything with me?

Just yourself and a list of your questions or concerns. If you have any paper documentation that relates to your case and you know where it is, it wouldn't hurt to bring it along. But you need not inconvenience yourself trying to dig up old documents; we can get whatever we need later.
